Vibrant new mural at the TGCA

The new TGCA mural went up last week and was unveiled on Friday, June 20. This piece of vibrant public art has been in the works for some time, and thanks to the efforts of our TGCA board members the piece made its community debut just in time for Neighbour Day 2025.

The mural artist, Sylvia Arthur, was on hand for a Meet the Artist opportunity at the event, which was moved indoors due to the downpour of rain that day. She was already fairly familiar with the centre because board members, Alison and Stacey, had showed her around the facility and brought her to a game in the arena too.

Sylvia is a born and raised Calgarian who is extensively educated in visual communications. She works as an exhibit and graphic designer, as well as maintaining a visual art practice. You can see her work at such notable place as Dinosaur Provincial Park, Writing-on-Stone, as well as numerous City of Calgary projects.

Here’s Sylvia’s description of the work from her website:

“This mural was created to represent the vibrant activity and sense of friendship at the Thorncliffe Greenview Community Association. The theme of the artwork began as ice sports and racquet sports. After consulting with community members and experiencing the centre many other fun aspects of recreation embellished the main theme. The composition is held together with a band of houses and yards representing the neighbourhood that encircles the fields of the community association. The mural can be experienced as four figures in action poses and a bright slash of colour as people drive by, but it also holds more intricate detail when viewed up close.”

The mural is on the SW wall of the south end of the building, right by the playground, so come by and have a look at this new public art that represents so well what we have to offer at the community centre, as well as what holds this community together – all of you!

And The TGCA sends a big “Thank You” to Gary Komusi, owner of Signs Talk, for all his help with the printing and installation of this project.
