As a community association, part of our mission is to provide community amenities combined with an array of programs like yoga, various leagues, a drop-in quilting group, and art classes in North Calgary.
We are consistently building on our programs to suit the needs of residents of Thorncliffe and Greenview.

Adult/Senior Programming at the TGCA
Hatha Yoga | Winter/Spring 2025 sessions announced below

Hatha Yoga is a mindful, lightly flowing class that builds strength, flexibility and breath work. Luann teaches an alignment-based flow – using breath to link the poses together. It is important to build strength and balance, as well as the flexibility that yoga is known for. This is an intermediate class but beginners are welcome to come and learn. Meet some nice folks who have realized the value of a yoga practice in their lives at Hatha Yoga at the TGCA.
The known physical and mental benefits of yoga practice are many. Here are just a few you can look forward to:

Location
Classes are in the Thorncliffe Room, which is right beside the admin office in the main lobby on the south side of the TGCA facility.
Pricing
Registration fee is $10 each class for members and $15 for non-members.
Drop-in fee Drop-in is $12 for members and $18 non-members. Luann, the instructor, will take cash only on Tuesdays but you can pay in the office on Fridays with cash, credit or debit.
What you’ll need
Bring a yoga mat and any props that you may need in your practice and wear something comfortable.
Memberships
$15 annually for residents of Thorncliffe & Greenview, as well as the greater Calgary area. This is a TGCA program, so you’ll get a 1/3 discount as a member. Please purchase or renew your membership here.

Chair Yoga - Senior Fitness | Winter/Spring 2025 sessions announced below
Join us for a 1-hour yoga practice that will include modified yoga poses, with the support of the chair, breathwork, and mindfulness. Our experienced instructor will provide adaptations for all-levels, including gentle poses within the chair and standing with the support of the chair. Our classes are a great way to engage with your community while finding gentle movement for yourself.
This class will increase your range of motion and improve strength and flexibility, you’ll learn stretches and create balance in both your body and mind while combining a fusion of general exercise and yoga while seated, with an option to do standing poses too. It’s a great class for those that aren’t as mobile or are looking to get some exercise in a low-impact environment.
Instructor bio: Meet Stephanie. Her yoga career began in 2021 and since then she hasn’t looked back! As the owner of the Alberta Yoga College, yoga is fundamental in her life, enabling her to share her passion each day throughout the community. She is a 200HR E-RYT and 500HR RYT certified yoga teacher. She specializes in yoga education – training yoga teachers, chair and modified yoga for aging adults, persons with limited mobility, and persons with disabilities, as well as the practices of wheel and aerial yoga.

You may register for this class online, in the office or over the phone. If you miss the registration window, you can pay drop-in in the office before class.

The TGCA office is located in the south building off of the main lobby. Registrants may pay with cash, debit, Visa or Mastercard in person.

Location
This class takes place in the Thorncliffe Room-beside the office across from the main hall. The room has access for those with disabilities via the ramp and sliding doors at the main lobby entrance on the south east side of the building. Please also find persons with disabilities parking on this side of the building.
Attire & Equipment
Participants should wear comfortable fitness or leisure clothing and appropriate shoes for a fitness activity, and will require a yoga mat if intending to participate in the standing aspects of the programming.
Pricing
All Fall sessions are 6 classes | $60 for members & $90 for non-members per session. GST will be added at checkout.
Drop-in: This class is open for drop-in. Drop-in is $12+GST and non-members $18+GST. Those paying drop-in may do so in the office with cash, debit or credit.

Adult Art Classes
Winter/Spring 2025 adult art classes announced below
Learning a new method of expression is a great way to explore your creativity, meet new people in the community and keep your mind keen while relieving stress. The TGCA will feature various forms of artistic classes in Winter/Spring 2025, and we invite you to come and communicate what’s in your mind through line, colour and form while expanding your self-confidence and skill in a safe and nonjudgmental environment.
Where? All art classes are in The Horizon Room, in the mid-section of the centre. Wheelchair accessible and washrooms adjacent. See entrance map at the bottom of this page.
When? Winter/Spring 2025 classes are Wednesdays at 7 – 8:30 pm & Saturdays at 10:30 am – noon.
Class size is maximum 8 registrants per class, due to small class sizes and structure, drop-in is not available for these classes.
Materials are not included in the class fees and students will need to bring supplies to class. Please see materials list per class below. All materials chosen by the instructor are intended to fit a budget.

Instructor, Karen MacDonald bio: Karen holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Alberta College of Art and Design (now Alberta University of the Arts) and a Bachelor of Education. As a multidisciplinary artist, Karen is currently focusing on a photographic printing process known as cyanotype, while also embracing a wide range of materials and techniques that align with her creative vision and themes. Through her entrepreneurial venture, Deep Blue Cyanotype, she offers handcrafted cyanotype items, prints, and workshops, providing a platform for others to explore this historic technique. Her art practice is driven by deep curiosity and openness to experimentation, blending traditional processes with innovative approaches. Explore the joy of creating art as a way to unwind and recharge in this relaxing art class. Each session introduces a simple and relaxing art project designed to calm the mind and spark creativity. Draw with Confidence | registration open Feb. 14 - Mar. 12

Using traditional drawing materials, transform the way you draw with techniques inspired by the popular manual “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” by Betty Edwards. This class offers simple exercises designed to help you see like an artist, improving your ability to capture proportions, perspectives, and details with precision. You’ll develop skills to overcome common challenges, such as drawing what you think you see rather than what is truly there, while gaining confidence in translating your observations onto the page. By the end of the course, you’ll have a deeper understanding of observation and enhanced technical drawing skills—perfect for beginners or anyone looking to sharpen their abilities.

Pen and Ink Drawing | registration open Apr. 4 - 25

Discover the beauty of pen and ink through an exploration of essential elements such as cross-hatching, stippling, contour drawing, applying washes, and working with color. These techniques will help build depth and texture in your drawings while creating dynamic and engaging compositions. Through a series of exercises and subject matter, you’ll gain familiarity with different pen and ink techniques, allowing you to create rich and expressive drawings. Create Dynamic Collages | registration open Dec. 18 - Jan. 17

Engage your imagination in this hands-on exploration of collage! In this class, participants will learn the art of combining diverse materials to create unique and dynamic compositions. Using paper, fabric, magazine images, found objects, and other media, you’ll explore the interplay of color, texture, and form while experimenting with layering and positioning to bring your ideas to life. Through a series of exercises, you will learn essential collage techniques while developing experience and understanding of different methods of creating an image. We’ll also look at inspiring examples from well known collage artists and discuss their techniques and approaches to spark your creativity. Whether you’re an experienced artist or new to the medium, this class will encourage playful experimentation, spark creativity, and help you discover the endless possibilities of collage.

Cyanotype Printmaking | registration open Feb. 14 - Mar. 12

Saturday, 10:30 am – noon | 6 dates, Mar. 15 – Apr. 19
Dive into the magic of cyanotype printing—an historic photographic technique that transforms light into art. In this class, you’ll use a non-toxic light-sensitive solution to coat paper and fabrics, arrange items on top, then expose under UV light. Watch as your designs come to life, revealing intricate patterns in deep, striking blues. Discover techniques for layering, and creating images using pressed leaves, flowers, glass objects, and other personal items. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist, this workshop series celebrates the fusion of science and art, offering an inspiring way to experiment with light, non-toxic chemistry, and creativity.

Botanicals with Acrylic Paint | registration open Apr. 4 - 25
Fees per class: $90 for members | $135 for non-members
Saturday, 10:30 am – noon | 6 dates, May 3 – June 7
In this class, students will dive into the dynamic interplay of positive and negative space using acrylic paint and botanical imagery. Acrylics are an ideal medium for this exploration, with their rich colours, versatility, and quick drying time, allowing for layering and detailed precision. We’ll draw inspiration from botanical artists examining how they engaged with the materials and subject matter to create strong and engaging compositions. Through a series of exercises, you will learn to create balance and harmony in your compositions by focusing on how plants and natural forms interact with their surrounding spaces. We will cover essential painting techniques such as layering, blending, and creating texture while experimenting with a variety of techniques. This course encourages creative expression while emphasizing the effective use of positive and negative space to enhance your compositions.

The Drop-in Quilting Group

Wednesdays, 10:30 am – 4:30 pm in the Thorncliffe Room | $12+tax
Nothing brings the idea of comfort to mind quite like a vibrant, inviting and cozy quilt. Why not make your own? The quilting program is a great place to meet some like-minded, crafty folks in the area. There are several quilters that participate in this small program that have plenty of knowledge to share and stories to tell.
This is a TGCA members’ program, which requires a membership to participate. Become a member here. If you are already a member and need to renew, please follow the instructions on the membership overview page to login and renew.
This program takes place in the Thorncliffe Room on Wednesdays, 10:30 am – 4:30 pm, so there’s lots of time to spread out and get some opinions on your latest project. The room is very large, and there are 3’x 6’ tables provided to put your materials and machine on.
There is an iron and ironing board provided by the group leader, Shelley.
Coffee is provided free of charge at each quilting day.
Participants can pay with cash, VISA, MasterCard or debit at the office, which is right next to the Thorncliffe room.

Seniors' Coffee Talk
Enjoy some coffee and company on Tuesdays; it’s pay what you can and all are welcome!
Coffee Talk is a great place to meet some new folks from the neighbourhood
Come and enjoy some coffee or tea, biscuits, and company in the boardroom on Tuesdays. There’s a variety of board games, puzzles and playing cards for participants to use. Come by yourself, meet a friend there, meet some new people, or connect with old friends. Enjoy some refreshments and the company of your neighbours or strike up a conversation with someone you haven’t met before. Creating new connections in the community is what Coffee Talk is all about.
When: Tuesdays, 10:30 am – 12:30 pm. Please note there’s no Coffee Talk on Dec. 24 or 31, 2024.
Where: the TGCA boardroom, south building beside the main lobby sliding doors.
What: coffee, tea, biscuits, games and conversation.
Who: seniors (loosely defined) – age is not important, just bring your enthusiasm!
Fee: pay what you can, tin next to the coffee and biscuits (Toonie suggested).
Entertainment: Puzzles, board games, cards and magazines provided. Please feel free to bring group activities to share with other Coffee Talkers.
Coffee Talk program guidelines: Program participants are expected to treat each other with courtesy and respect. Please come to the office and tell our programming and community engagement coordinator, Vanessa, at the front desk. if someone is being unkind or disruptive. Please put your games and puzzles back in the box by 12:30 pm and leave on the table.
