Saturday morning class

Develop your Creative Process in Acrylic

Fees: $160 for members | $240 for non-members

Saturday, 10:30 am – 12:30 pm | 8 dates, Oct. 10 – Nov. 28 | registration open Sept. 18 – Oct. 2

Working first from instructor-selected photos and later from your own images, this course guides you through the creative process, from choosing a subject to developing a strong, visually engaging painting. You’ll learn how to quickly block in the basic composition, sketch the underlying structure onto the canvas, and simplify forms and values to create a solid foundation. Through colour harmony, texture, and varied brushwork, you’ll add interest to every part of the scene while learning to mix a rich range of colours. As you progress, smooth transitions with subtle tonal shifts will appear. Using layering techniques, you’ll build depth and atmosphere. Acrylic paint’s quick drying time makes it easy to adjust edges, refine details, and rework areas as needed—so you can change, enhance, or add anything as the painting develops. Open to beginner and intermediate artists, this class is best approached as an acrylic painting course, though the basics can apply to watercolourists as well. Expect to work on each painting over one or two classes.

Materials required for this class here.

Wednesday evening class

Fees: $120 for members | $180 for non-members

Wednesdays, 7 – 8:30 pm  | 8 dates, Sept 30 – Dec. 2 | no class on Nov. 11 | registration open Sept. 14 – 28

This class explores pastel techniques, composition tips, and colour-blending strategies for creating striking effects. Through hands-on drawing exercises, you’ll practise loose, free-hand techniques while working with subjects such as perspective, textured fields, river reflections, waterfalls, florals, rock studies, and still life using everyday objects. Learn when to use expressive gesture, relaxed contour lines, and adjusted values to add depth and light. Working with pastel, pen, charcoal and eraser, each class includes a guided project from start to finish, with opportunities to develop more substantial work over a two-day period. Ideal for beginner and intermediate artists.

Materials required for this class here.
