A Winter Solstice Celebration | Lantern Craft & Walk

Celebration lit up the TGCA!

The Winter Solstice Celebration was anything but dark on the longest night of the year! The lantern craft was a hit and sub-zero temperatures didn’t keep families from braving the cold to participate in this inclusive community activity.

Thanks so much to our Director extraordinaire, Pamela Haskell, for coordinating this event. The music provided by Ruth Purves Smith set the mood for the whimsical night, so a big thanks to her too!

Let’s light up the night on the Winter Solstice this year!

Wednesday, December 21st, 2022 | 6:00 to 8:00 pm

Live music provided by Ruth Purves Smith

Registration is now closed.

In the Thorncliffe Room, Thorncliffe Greenview Community Centre and outdoors (weather-dependent).

Come celebrate the longest night of the year and official first day of winter with a special event full of light and music. Decorate a lantern and then join a short outdoor walk (now planned for indoor due to extreme cold forecast) to light up the night with music along the way provided by Ruth Purves Smith. We’ll finish the night with hot chocolate and more music.

All ages welcome to make lanterns. No childcare provided at this event, children must be supervised.

Registration required by donation, $0 – $15 | $10 suggested registration price.

Anyone making a lantern must register to receive craft supplies the evening of the event, however this is a pay-what-you-can event to eliminate barriers to participating. The TGCA does ask that you only register kids and parents in your immediate family.

Each registered participant will receive a seasonal lantern (battery powered light included) to decorate. Lanterns snap together and can be constructed by any age. Decorating supplies will be provided by the TGCA.

Event schedule

  • Lantern decorating starts at 6:00 pm.
  • Lantern walk starts at 7:00 pm, weather permitting. If the weather is good, we will be outside for up to 30 minutes – please wear warm clothes, gloves and boots. Lantern walk now planned inside due to extreme cold weather.
  • Then we’ll come back to the Thorncliffe Room and warm up with the hot chocolate and seasonal music.
Various patterns for lantern sides will be given – heart, sun, deer, moon, stars. Lanterns snap together easily. Any child can make this craft with a bit of help from an adult. Battery operated LED tea light included.
