After last night’s incredibly destructive storm, the TGCA is hoping to help with some storm cleanup information, while collecting names of people in need of help with the initial cleanup of their property, as well as volunteers who can offer help.
There’s been a number of downed trees, flooding and other damage in the neighbourhood, but all power outages but 1 appear to have been resolved. If you’re not sure where to report damage on your property, please see info below.
Storm cleanup information and resources
Downed trees
If you have a downed tree on your property, call 311. The city can determine whether it’s a city-owned tree or if the tree is a danger to residents or property owners. The tree may be determined to be your responsibility, at which point, you’ll need to contact an arborist.
Broken trees
If a broken tree is blocking a road, sidewalk, or causing other safety concerns, call 311. If there are no immediate safety concerns with a broken tree on your property, make sure and have your tree assessed by a licensed arborist as soon as possible.
Clogged storm drains
If your street is still flooded, there is likely a clog in a storm drain on your block. Call 311 to report the pooling water and the city will address it as soon as possible.
Downed or entangled powerlines
If you see a downed or entangled powerline, call 911. After calling 911, call Enmax at 310-9473. Stay at least 10 feet away from the line and put out pylons, if at all possible.
Indoor flooding
Any indoor flooding should be dealt with immediately, as mould can form in a matter of hours. If you smell gas or water is or was above electrical outlets, call 911. For basement seepage or flooding, call 311. Visit this page for flooding advice: https://www.calgary.ca/water/flooding/returning-home.html
You can also report concerns to 311 online on this page: https://www.calgary.ca/311.html
Need help? Can you help?
Community members (particularly seniors) may need help with moving downed or broken trees, as well as moving debris off of pathways, putting debris in their green bins, or contacting arborists or services like Enmax. The TGCA is not asking that volunteers do any tasks that only a certified arborist should do, such as assessing damaged trees or using a chainsaw to cut down trees etc. but advising a neighbour on how to proceed may be extremely helpful in the coming days.
The TGCA is collecting names of volunteers as well as names of folks in need of help, so if you can help, please fill out the “sign up to volunteer to help” form link, and if you need help, please fill out the “sign up to request help” form link.
We’re taking names of residents who can’t afford to hire help or don’t have a network of folks to help them with any pressing task on their property in this initial cleanup phase, such as downed or broken trees blocking doors or walkways, indoor flooding or broken fencing. If you don’t have anyone to help with these issues, the TGCA will do their best to match you with volunteers from the area. Please sign up with the form below or call the TGCA office at 403-274-6840 extension 100 or ask for Vanessa.
We’re also looking for volunteers to go to residents in needs’ homes to help them assess their property, report any issues as outlined above (if they haven’t already), move any large debris that is safe to move out of pathways, doorways and windows. Volunteers should be able to lift over 20 lbs. If you are willing to volunteer to help a neighbour with their initial cleanup, please fill out the form below or call the TGCA office at 403-274-6840, extension 100 or ask for Vanessa.
The TGCA will attempt to match volunteers and residents-in-need based on proximity and resources, at which time they will be given each other’s phone numbers and can make their own arrangements.
