Calgary Ukrainian Evacuee Welcome Committee looking for host homes

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress-Alberta is seeking residents with a spare room available for 3 months or more.

Via the committee member, Yuliya Gorbach:

We are working to match new Ukrainian arrivals with home hosts, working closely with Port Immigration Agency Calgary (Le Portail de l’Immigrant Association (PIA)) and PIA employee Marie Anichkina, who contacted us at the very beginning of the war and offered her help. This agency is doing this work for last four month out of their own initiative without government financing to support Ukrainian evacuees. They developed legally sound process that ensures wellbeing of the hosts and evacuees. This agency is also provides all necessary support to Ukrainian evacuees and information to the hosts to ensure that Ukrainian evacuees get on their feet as quick as possible and that hosts are not overburdened.

I am pleading to you to appeal to your parishes and communities and ask for families to step up and accept Ukrainian evacuees for 2-3 months so they can get on their feet and find a job and their own place to live. The problem is Ukrainian evacuees are not government sponsored refugees. They are not getting supports that government sponsored refugee gets. All they get when they coming in is $3000 per adult and $1500 per child. They also get a work permit for 3 years. We all know that is far cry from what is needed to establish even minimum level of living in Canada. If the family is hosted for 2-3 months, they can learn english and attain higher paying jobs and be able to afford better paying job. All Ukrainian evacuees want is decency to support their living on their own. They don’t want to be a burden.

See below a link to volunteer hosts application that PIA administers. Can you please send it to your parishes and communities and please ask people to step up and open their homes for Ukrainian evacuees. Please ask them to fill out this form.

If anyone is interested of getting additional information of what is all involved in hosting a family, please let us know and we will provide it.

Please let me know if you have any question.

Thank you very much in advance!

Most respectfully,

Yuliya Gorbach
